Where the dial lands

  • What is the healthy range in kilos?

At 1.65 m the healthy band runs from 50.4 kg to 68.1 kg — nearly 18 kilos of room, which is why the healthy range is a band rather than a number.

  • Why do four formulas give four different weights?

For the same man at 175 cm the four published rules of thumb give 72.0 kg, 70.5 kg, 68.9 kg and 68.7 kg — 3.3 kilos between the highest and the lowest. They were drawn up for working out drug doses, which is why the page shows a range and never a target.

  • How much is five kilos?

At 1.75 m, five kilos is worth 1.6 BMI points: 75 kg reads 24.5 and 80 kg reads 26.1. The healthy line is crossed at 76.6 kg.
